The ROG Phone 6 and the ROG Phone 6 Pro, the newest premium gaming smartphones from Asus, were revealed earlier today. Let’s investigate these gadgets to see what they are all about.
Design and display
Starting with the aesthetics, the company has maintained the successful formula of the futuristic design since customers praised the ROG Phone 6 series‘ appearance. The rear of the standard model contains a vertical RGB strip that can simultaneously light up in two distinct colours.
The Pro model, on the other hand, has an additional display on the rear that can be customised with a variety of animations and used to show alerts or system stats. Compared to the previous generation, the camera bump is a little bit larger, but it maintains the same
The gadgets are easier and more pleasant to grip because of their curved edges. The device’s power button, volume rocker, and a few Air Triggers on each end are all located on the right edge.
The 6.78-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen on the vanilla and Pro variants has a 165Hz refresh rate, a 720Hz touch sampling rate, and an in-display fingerprint reader for security. It supports HDR10+ and the 111 percent DCI-P3 colour gamut and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
Specifications
Both smartphones use a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset under the hood. Although this processor significantly outperforms the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in terms of thermals and efficiency, Asus has gone above and above to guarantee optimal cooling for maximum performance. The device’s thermals stay below the throttling limit for up to 30 minutes thanks to its 360-degree CPU cooling and 30% bigger vapour chamber.
Asus has revealed an updated active cooling solution in the shape of the AeroActive Cooler 6 for consistent performance above and beyond that threshold. The smartphone was able to reach an average of 59.4 FPS on Genshin impact while maintaining the rear panel temperatures under 44.2 degrees Celsius by using the built-in passive cooling (30-minute session). On the other hand, the device only achieved an average FPS of 59.7 FPS with the Active Aero Cooler 6 installed, and average back panel temperatures of only 37.2 degrees (1-hour session).
Up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 521GB of UFS 3.1 storage may be found on the base ROG Phone 6. On the other hand, the ROG Phone 6 Pro has 512GB of storage and 18GB of RAM. Additionally, the phone has a headphone port, three microphones, Dirac Virtuo spatial audio, and two front-facing speakers. It has a twin cell battery with a 6000mAh capacity overall and 65W rapid charging.
Two USB-C connections are provided for charging, and a USB-C to HDMI connector is included on the side port so customers may play their mobile games on a larger screen. The 3.5mm jack is also available for gamers that want zero latency audio. Last but not least, the smartphone has IPX4 water resistance and runs on an Android 12-based ROG UI.
Cameras
In terms of optics, the smartphones include a triple camera configuration with a 50MP Sony IMX766 main sensor as its focal point. It has a 5MP macro camera and a 13MP ultrawide lens. A 12MP Sony IMX663 sensor for selfies is available on the front.
Accessories Along with the smartphone, Asus has released the AeroActive Cooler 6 and the ROG Kunai 3 controller.
AeroActive Coolers 6
The AeroActive Cooler 6 is a cooler that attaches to the rear panel in a snap-on method to assist maintain cool temperatures. In addition, it features a few buttons and triggers on the rear that enable it to function as a controller.
Asus ROG Kunai 3 controller
On the other hand, the Kunai 3 is a specialised gamepad that can be used as a Bluetooth controller for the phone or other devices or hooked to a smartphone to make it into a handheld console.
