Serhiy Leshchenko, a close aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, denied to CNN that Zelenskiy had declined German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s visit on Wednesday.
Steinmeier said that he intended to go to Kyiv alongside his Polish counterpart as well as the presidents of Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia to convey a message of Solidarity with Ukraine.
Due to his close contacts with Russia in recent years and his years of support for the Nord Stream 2 gas project, which was planned to enhance the flow of Russian gas directly to Germany but was eventually cancelled, Zelenskiy had declined Steinmeier’s invitation to visit.
