The dramatic defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard ended on Wednesday after six weeks of evidence and deliberations.
In his libel case against his ex-wife, a Virginia jury awarded Depp more than $10 million, claiming that the Aquaman actress defamed the Pirates of the Caribbean in a contentious 2018 piece for The Washington Post.
Heard’s lawyer now claims that the jury in the defamation case was “confused,” and that Depp, 58, benefited from his “power, fortune, and renown.”
She also said that Heard intends to appeal the decision.
Elaine Charlson Bredehoft, Heard’s attorney, stated on Today that “an unbelievable quantity of material” that might have aided Heard’s case was concealed during the trial.
“A number of things were permitted in this court that should not have been allowed, and it led the jury to be confused,” Bredehoft alleged, adding, “a number of things were allowed in this court that should not have been allowed, and it caused the jury to be confused.”
Heard’s lawyer stated in an interview with CNN that the jury voted in Depp’s favor on all of his accusations because he had the edge of ‘money, power, and celebrity.’
Depp filed a $50 million lawsuit against Heard in 2018 for an op-ed she published in which she accused him of physically assaulting her during their marriage.
