Instagram, a site owned by Meta, said on Thursday that it is experimenting with new techniques to confirm users’ ages.
According to Business Recorder, the photo/video sharing app said that it is exploring two distinct methods that would enable users to prove their age online, beginning in the United States.
Users of the software will also be able to post their identities on the internet.
“When we know if someone is a teen (13-17 years old), we provide them with age-appropriate experiences like defaulting them into private accounts, preventing unwanted contact from adults they don’t know, and limiting the options advertisers have to reach them with ads,” said Erica Finkle, director of data governance at Meta.
Instagram is working with Yoti, an AI programme that analyses a person’s face to determine their age.
Once users share a video selfie of themselves, Yoti will estimate their ages. The social media app said that after age verification, the videos will be removed.
The second choice gives users the chance to choose three mutual s who will confirm the users’ ages. The verifying party, however, must be at least 18 years old.
The choice was made after Instagram received harsh criticism after the debut of Instagram Kids, which led to the project’s suspension.
