Karachi is likely to face a chicken shortage as the Poultry Shopkeepers, Retailers, and Wholesalers Association have declared a shutter-down strike across the city.
Local media reported that a strike has been declared in protest against what is perceived as unjust fines and arrests. Wholesalers have halted the supply of chicken to vendors, and retailers in the market have declared a shutdown until their demands are met.
According to a spokesperson for the poultry association, the administration is issuing price lists without considering the real-world challenges faced by poultry vendors, leading to hardships for them.
As per the association in Sindh and Balochistan, they can’t sell chicken at a standard rate and urged the concerned officials to release a price list daily.
Poultry associations across the country have expressed strong disapproval of the authorities’ decision to set fixed prices for chicken. Just last month, the poultry associations in Rawalpindi and Islamabad took a united stand by organizing a peaceful strike to protest against the standardized chicken rates implemented in Punjab.
