In Islamabad, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Barrister Gohar Khan has made a strong appeal for the liberation of party leaders, including the former Prime Minister Imran Khan. This call comes in response to remarks made by Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, emphasizing the need for a nation free of political detainees to achieve reconciliation.
On Saturday, the COAS extended congratulations to Pakistan on the successful execution of the general elections. He highlighted the necessity for stable governance and a conciliatory approach to overcome the divisive politics affecting the nation, which is home to over 250 million people. He emphasized that elections should serve as a means to acknowledge the public’s choice rather than being seen as merely a contest of victory and defeat.
In discussions with international media, Barrister Gohar Khan underscored the importance of honoring PTI’s electoral mandate as essential for national healing. He clarified that the army chief’s call for a united government doesn’t imply forming a coalition but rather suggests a consensus on valuing the electoral mandate across all parties.
Barrister Khan shed light on the election outcomes, highlighting that a significant number of independent candidates supported by PTI emerged victorious under challenging circumstances. He mentioned PTI’s plans to challenge the results in 50 constituencies due to alleged irregularities. He confidently stated PTI’s strong performance in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and expressed optimism about forming the government in these regions as well as at the national level.
He voiced concerns over the delayed announcement of election results, urging the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to finalize the results promptly. Khan warned of planned protests by PTI outside the Returning Officer (RO) offices in areas where results remain pending.
The PTI chairman concluded with a hopeful note on the judiciary overturning Imran Khan conviction, leading to his eventual release, signifying a pivotal moment for the party and its supporters in their quest for justice and respect for the democratic process.
