WhatsApp has been actively adding new features to keep up with its competitors, and its latest move aims to challenge Google Meet and Zoom.
The messaging app, owned by Meta, is upgrading its group calling functionality. In the recent beta version of WhatsApp for Android (2.23.17.7), a feature was spotted that allows users to schedule group calls, much like what Google Meet and Zoom offer.
This new feature enables users to plan and schedule calls for groups in advance, and it notifies all members of the group about the scheduled call. Although this feature had been seen in an earlier beta version, it’s now being tested by beta users, indicating that its official release is closer.

In this updated feature, the call button within a group chat will offer the option to schedule a call for a later time. Users can specify the date, time, and purpose of the conference call, and they can choose between a video or audio call. Those who intend to participate can tap “Join call,” and they’ll receive a notification 15 minutes before the scheduled call time.
This enhancement should simplify the process of planning calls and eliminates the need for manual reminders, as automatic notifications are built-in.
It’s important to note that this feature is currently in the beta stage and will gradually become available to more users in the upcoming weeks. The exact timeline for its widespread release to all WhatsApp users hasn’t been disclosed yet.
