According to officials at Sotheby’s, the auction house managing the diamond, a 15.1-carat blue diamond due to go on sale in April might bring upwards of $48 million.
In April 2021, the De Beers Cullinan Blue, a beautiful intense blue diamond, was found at the Cullinan mine in South Africa. According to Sotheby’s, the mine is one of the few areas on the planet where rare blue stones have been discovered.
“Blue diamonds of any sort are uncommon on the market,” Patti Wong, chairman of Sotheby’s Asia, said, “but this is the rarest of the rare; nothing of remotely comparable grade has shown at auction in recent years.”
De Beers bought a 39.34-carat rough diamond discovered in the mine in 2008 and cut it into the diamond.
According to The Robb Report, the diamond is one of numerous blue diamonds that have gone up for sale in recent years. In 2016, the 14.62-carat Oppenheimer Blue diamond was auctioned for $57.5 million, while the $48.5 million Blue Moon of Josephine blue diamond was auctioned in 2015.
