A TikTok video of a group of alligators responding to a woman saying “he’s enormous” has gone viral, amusing the internet.
Since its publication in early March, Morgan16 22’s TikTok video has received over 2.9 million views and 638,000 likes.
A group of alligators can be seen making hissing sounds in the water below at the start of the video. One person can be heard exclaiming, “Oh wow,” followed by, “He’s gigantic, too.”
The alligators then all lock their gazes in the same direction as if reacting to the woman’s remark.
According to John Brueggen, director of the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park in Florida, alligators have been found to respond to human speech.
“I believe these creatures spotted something, such as a feeding bucket or a fish on a line, and that is what caused them all to wake up at the same time,” said Brueggen, who works with the park’s 24 crocodilians.
We see alligators respond to our voice signals on a daily basis. They’re intelligent creatures who are relatively easy to train.”
Similarly, Lindsey Lawson, who runs a reptile breeding business in the United States, told Newsweek that these alligators are clearly used to being fed by humans.
“The response seen in this video is the result of some kind of stimulation to the person filming’s left.” Because of the video’s short length, it’s impossible to say for sure what triggered the reaction, but it’s most likely a visual or aural stimulus in the form of a well-known food source,” she explained.
According to Lawson, a person can be seen swimming to the left in the video’s right centre while alligators react.
“An alligator’s eyes are on the sides of its head, giving them a broad visual range and great peripheral vision, even though the larger alligator appears to be staring straight at the lady filming after she made a statement. “He has a great perspective of what’s going on off to the left while facing her directly,” she explained.
Although the location of the viral video is unknown, alligators can be found all over the United States. They can be found all over the southeast, as well as up into North Carolina. In Florida and Louisiana, they are very common.
The alligators appeared to be offended by the woman’s remarks, according to social media users who commented on the video.
